My name is Dido Carrero and I am a bioinformatician focused on the study of genomic traits in the context of cancer, with a particular focus on the mutational contexts driving tumour development, evolution and pathogenesis, and on the discovery of new potential cancer predisposition genes.
I studied Biology at the University of Oviedo (Spain), where I also completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Carlos López-Otín. My doctoral research focused on discovering new mechanisms to ameliorate premature ageing and improve healthspan in patients suffering from age-related diseases. During this period, I was involved in the genetic diagnosis of novel rare premature ageing syndromes, as well as in the sequencing and characterisation of animal species known for their exceptional longevity, their ability to resist extreme environmental conditions, or their rejuvenation capacities, which led to the discovery of new mechanisms with potential relevance to human ageing.
After my PhD, I moved to clinical genomics and joined the CNIO Bioinformatics Unit in 2023. Since then, I have been involved in the IMPaCT-VUSCan project, developing an AI-based tool to identify potentially pathogenic mutations in families suspected to have hereditary cancer who remain undiagnosed. I am also working in the genomic characterisation of the RENACER cohort, which comprises over 300 patients suffering from brain metastasis, with the aim of uncovering traits that may point to new effective therapeutic strategies.
Alongside my scientific career, I have also studied Art History and maintain an active involvement in the artistic world through a personal creative project.
