Dr. Michael Tress is a senior researcher at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), where he has worked since 2006 after previously carrying out research at the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC) in Madrid. His research focuses on computational biology, structural bioinformatics, and genome annotation, with a particular interest in understanding how genomic variation affects protein structure and function. His work combines large-scale genomic and proteomic datasets with advanced computational methods to improve the interpretation of genetic variants and support precision medicine and cancer research.
Dr. Tress was an active contributor to the international GENCODE project, which provides high-quality reference annotations of human and mouse genes and transcripts. He has also played a leading role in the development of widely used bioinformatics resources, including APPRIS, FireDB, and firestar, which have significantly contributed to the annotation of protein isoforms, functional residues, and structural features of proteins. These tools have become valuable resources for the interpretation of genomic data and the functional characterization of proteins in both basic and translational research.
