Hello world! I am Head of the Bioinformatics Unit at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), where I direct research in computational cancer biology. My work focuses on developing computational approaches to understand cancer biology through the integration of genomic, multi-omics, and clinical data, with the ultimate goal of advancing precision oncology.
Over the past two decades, my research has combined computational method development with translational cancer genomics to improve the interpretation of cancer genomes, identify clinically relevant biomarkers, predict therapeutic response, and discover new treatment opportunities through drug repositioning. More recently, my group has been exploring artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches to better characterize tumour heterogeneity and therapeutic vulnerabilities.
Beyond my own research, I enjoy building collaborative environments that bring together computational scientists, biologists, clinicians, and data experts. I have been actively involved in developing national and European initiatives that promote the sharing, interoperability, and analysis of cancer genomic data. I currently lead the ELIXIR Cancer Community and participate in several collaborative projects aimed at enabling the implementation of genomic medicine across Europe.
Before establishing the Bioinformatics Unit at CNIO in 2012, I carried out research at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, following my PhD training at CNIO and CIPF. Throughout my career, I have been motivated by the challenge of translating advances in computational biology into practical tools and knowledge that can improve cancer research and, ultimately, patient care.
I have authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, with over 21,000 citations, and I serve on international scientific advisory boards, funding review panels, and scientific committees. I am also committed to mentoring early-career researchers and promoting collaborative, multidisciplinary science.
